Wednesday 25th September – Bike and walk *** Benouville to Ouistreham - cloudy

The little cat brought her kitten to play:) Such a chubby little thing, she has done a great job to bring her up so well living in a clearing by the canal! It must be lots of friendly camper vans feeding her. We gave her lots more ham and they both had a bowl of milk. The kitten was in the bowl at some points! We decided to bike to Sword beach after breakfast as it seems too nice to travel all day. We biked across Pegasus bridge and along the canal until we reached Ouistreham and the war memorial on the beach. There is a brilliant bike path all the way and we got up a good speed! Back to the van to share lunch with the cat – kitten must have been asleep. She had a real treat, tinned fish from me and ham from Mag then more milk! It was quite hard to leave her really:( We left about 1 and drove to Mont St. Michel which was just over 90 miles. We called in at the only solely German cemetery which overlooks the Mont. It was very poignant, nearly 12,000 soldiers in vaults containing 180 bodies per vault. They were all re-buried here together in 1961 from many areas of France and from as far away as the channel islands. We have been into the town at Mont St. Michel before and it is full of trinket and souvenir shops so we didn’t want to go in again but it is very impressive to look at from a distance so we parked in a picnic area a couple of miles away and admired it from afar. We met a couple from Australia and got chatting to them so sat at a picnic bench and made us all a cuppa. Before tea we walked for nearly an hour towards the Mont across the field of sheep beside the van . There are lambs which we couldn’t quite understand as it seems the wrong time of year. Took lots of photos of the Mont at sunset and lit up in the dark. We are going to chance staying here tonight.
